Here are the top 7 reasons to move to Knoxville!
1. Affordable Cost of Living & Housing
Knoxville has a lower cost of living than the U.S. average, especially when it comes to housing — meaning you can often find more space and quality homes without the price tag of larger metro areas.
2. High-Quality Schools & Education Opportunities
Knoxville and Knox County Schools include several highly rated public schools (like Farragut High School and Hardin Valley Academy), strong extracurricular options, and respected private schools such as Webb School of Knoxville and Christian Academy of Knoxville — all of which attract families looking for excellent K–12 education.
The presence of the University of Tennessee also enriches the city academically, culturally, and socially for college students and lifelong learners alike.
3. Parks, Greenways & Outdoor Recreation
Knoxville’s outdoor scene is a major draw — from downtown green spaces to expansive nature areas:
Ijams Nature Center and the Urban Wilderness offer trails, bike routes, climbing, and river access right near the city.
World’s Fair Park, home to the iconic Sunsphere and green lawns for concerts and festivals, is a central hub for community fun.
Seven Islands State Birding Park provides extensive hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing along the French Broad River.
Chilhowee Park blends parkland with events and family activities.
The city’s Parks & Recreation Department also organizes year-round community events like Concerts in the Park, Doggie Dip Day, and seasonal programs that bring neighbors together outdoors.
4. Rich Entertainment & Cultural Life
Knoxville offers a lively arts & entertainment scene far beyond what many expect from a mid-sized city:
Historic venues like the Tennessee Theatre and Bijou Theatre host concerts, touring Broadway shows, and movies.
Downtown Market Square and the Old City are bustling with restaurants, breweries, nightlife, and live music.
Annual festivals — such as the Dogwood Arts Festival in spring and the Tennessee Valley Fair in fall — celebrate local culture, food, art, and community.
Sporting events, UT athletics, museums, galleries, and family attractions like Zoo Knoxville add to the entertainment mix.
5. Strong Local Economy & Job Market
The Knoxville area has a stable economy with opportunities in healthcare, education, research, technology, and manufacturing. Major employers include the University of Tennessee, Covenant Health, and nearby Oak Ridge National Lab, contributing to job growth and career diversity.
6. Friendly, Community-Oriented Lifestyle
Knoxville combines a welcoming Southern vibe with small-town feel and big-city amenities. Friendly neighborhoods, community events, volunteer opportunities, and a strong sense of belonging make it easy for newcomers to connect.
7. Prime Location for Travel & Nature
Situated near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Knoxville offers easy access to some of the nation’s most scenic hiking, waterfalls, and outdoor adventures. The city’s location also makes regional travel — to Asheville, Nashville, Atlanta, or coastal areas — convenient for weekend getaways.
